Hello again, forum, This is my second post here, and I am very excited to become someone's penpal, but I have another little question. Is it acceptable to put a little strip or two of tape on the envelope to secure it so it doesn't open on it's way to the recipient? I did lick (blech! hate the taste of the glue!) the envelop to close it, but it doesn't seem really secure, and I'm afraid it will open before it reaches my new penpal! I have read some of the 'rules' regarding mail, and I know stickers aren't allowed, but would tape be okay? Thanks in advance for all the help. I am really looking foward to making this a long term thing. I love sending and receiving mail, and I look foward to hopefully making some friends. :)

It totally depends where you are sending your mail to. Most places don't allow stickers, tape etc. One pal I have even told me I cannot put an address label on.
Than again, one guy gets letters with stickers, and lots of tape. It has never been a problem.
You could always ring the facility and ask for the mailroom to ask what their rules are.
Or just send the letter without, and ask your pal.

There was a disgusting article circulating on the internet a few months back about unhygenic conditions in plants that manufacture envelopes. After reading that I'd never lick another envelope. So I buy the pre-glued envelopes that you just peel off a piece of tape to expose the sticky side. Or invest in a small sponge to do the "licking" for you. I wouldn't use tape; most prisons would return your mail. Also if you make a mistake in the address;start over, don't try to correct it. I've had letters returned because of the use of "white out". It is considered a "foreign substance".

I've used both tape and correction fluid but only at certain facilities. The rest I don't dare. One time I sent a brown clasp envelope that was so stuffed I had to secure it. Cut out the metal clasp and put tape on the flap, but also wrote a huge note on the back to the mailroom to PLEASE remove the tape before handing over the envelope. My pal was summoned to the office (not good) to receive the contents, but not the envelope. I was very lucky that went through and haven't done that again.

You can always use the envelopes Margola mentioned. I use a glue stick. Took me a bit to learn how not to glue the pages inside together and not get residue on the outside. Works great.
